Evening primrose oil is the main ingredient of the product. The ingredient is valued for its essential oil, rich in gamma-Linolenic acid (GLA), an Omega-6 fatty acid. Both of these acids are essential for the proper functioning of our body.
Fats contained in food are the most concentrated source not only of energy but also of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PFA). These acids exogenous fatty acids are so-called essential fatty acids, because they cannot be synthesized in the human organism, but they must be delivered to it with food, in contrast to endogenous endogenous acids.
GLA occurs naturally in the fatty acid fraction of some vegetable oils. These include Evening Primrose Oil (EPO), borage oil, black blackcurrant and hemp seed oil. GLA is present in EPO at a concentration of 8-15 % of the total amount of fatty acids; in borage seed oil it is present in 18-25 %, and in blackcurrant seed oil at 12-18 %. GLA is also found in small amounts in some fungi. In the human body It is produced in minimal quantities in the human body, and is formed as a terminal metabolite from linolenic acid by enzymes such as delta-5 and delta-6 desaturase (Fig. 2). Although GLA belongs to the EFAs, it is often called a conditionally essential acid. This indispensability appears when in the organism decreases activity of the enzyme delta-6- desaturase.
The formation of GLA is not only dependent on the presence of enzymes. It can also be accelerated by zinc, vitamins B3, B6, C and E, and magnesium. However, it is inhibited by extrinsic factors such as age, drinking coffee and alcohol, reduced insulin levels insulin, consumption of saturated trans-fatty acids and foods simple sugars (glucose, fructose) in excessive amounts, low-fat diets, dietary protein deficiency, hypothyroidism and elevated glucocorticoid levels. It is therefore very important to supplement the diet with essential nutrients.
